The Department of Literary Studies is one of the main departments in Faculty of Dar Al-Uloom. Its educational and research mission focuses on the study of Arabic literature in its various periods: pre-Islamic, Islamic, Umayyad, Abbasid, Andalusian, modern, and contemporary. The department aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the development of Arabic literature, both poetry and prose, in terms of forms, themes, aesthetic techniques, and the historical, social, and political contexts that contributed to its production.
The department also focuses on training students in modern methodologies for analyzing literary texts, such as structuralism, deconstruction, stylistics, psychoanalysis, and others. This equips students with the scientific tools to understand texts, deconstruct their structures and meanings in light of contemporary readings.
The curriculum combines theoretical study with practical application through the analysis of selected texts representing prominent figures of Arabic literature in each era. Emphasis is placed on highlighting artistic and linguistic characteristics, and students are trained in Conscious reading, critical writing, and research presentations.
The department prepares its graduates to be academic researchers, teachers of Arabic language and literature, and active participants in cultural and intellectual life, by deepening their awareness of the Arabic literary heritage and developing their ability to critically interact with literary texts, both old and new.
