This department studies Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew linguistics.
First Year:
a) General Linguistics:
Its definition, properties, and classification; Language as a system (phonetic, morphological, syntactic, semantic); Linguistic levels; Spoken and written language.
The place of linguistics among the humanities; Philology; Branches of linguistics; Research methodologies in linguistics; Its relationship to other sciences.
b) Arabic Linguistics:
Its definition and properties; The Holy Quran and the Arabic language; Arabic dialects; Writing and its stages of development; Arabic sciences.
Second Year:
a) Linguistics:
First: Arabic phonetics; Linguistic library.
Second: Arabic dictionaries (their origins, types, and schools).
(b) Semitic and Oriental Studies:
This is divided into Persian and Hebrew, and the student chooses one language to study:
- Hebrew: Basic rules for reading and writing Hebrew; simplified prose texts for grammar practice; an introduction to the history of Semitic languages and the relationship between Hebrew and Arabic.
- Persian: Basic rules of Persian; simplified prose texts for translation and grammar practice.
Third Year:
First: Linguistics:
- Sociolinguistics: The place of sociolinguistics in linguistic studies; factors of unification and differentiation in language and dialect; linguistic diversity and its patterns; language and culture; language and religion; and language and politics.
- Semantics: Its concept and its relationship to other languages; its fields and applications among Arabs; its problems; its causes; its patterns; and its relationship to other sciences.
Second: Persian and Hebrew Languages:
- Hebrew: Completion of grammar – Texts from the Torah and their comparison with Arabic.
- Persian: Historical literary periods – Prose and poetry texts – An overview of Persian literature.
Fourth Year:
a) Modern Linguistics:
Problems of contemporary Arabic – Modern linguistic schools.
b) Comparative or Contrastive Linguistics:
- Hebrew: Comparative linguistic phenomena – Hebrew texts and their comparison with Arabic – Andalusian Hebrew texts and their impact on the Jews of Andalusia.
- Persian: Comparative linguistic and literary phenomena – Persian literary periods – Mutual influence and interaction between the two languages and literatures, Persian and Arabic.
