Description of Grammar and Morphology Courses

Course description for morphology and prosody:

First Year

First Year – Verb Conjugation:

Duration of Study: 4 hours – One semester

⇐ Course Objectives:

To gain a general understanding of morphology rules and to distinguish between Arabic structures.

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to:

Recognize the difference between verbs, nouns, and particles.

Understand the origins of morphology.

Recognize the morphological scale of words.

Recognize the basic and derived forms of verbs and their categories.

Understand what happens to a verb when it is conjugated with pronouns, etc.

⇐ Cognitive Skills:

Compare morphology and syntax.

Deduce the difference between nouns, verbs, and particles.

Distinguish between weak and sound verbs.

Analyze augmentative letters and their effects.

Understand the types of intransitive and transitive verbs.

To balance the effect of augmentation with moving and consonant pronouns.

To identify the basic and derived forms of verbs.

To understand the effect of vowel changes and substitutions on verb form.

Grade for students (regularity): 15 marks + 5 marks for practical exercises.

Grade for students (affiliation): 20 marks.

Course hours: 3 hours of lectures + 1 hour of coursework.

5- Teaching Methods:

Lectures

Using the whiteboard

Discussion and dialogue

6- Teaching Students with Special Needs:

Recording lectures and uploading them to the faculty website.

Using Braille for visually impaired students.

Providing them with further explanations and training.

7- Student Assessment:

Methods used: Final written exam.

Timeframe: The course is one semester.

Grade Distribution: 15 marks + 5 marks for practical exercises for regular students

20 marks for affiliated students.

First: Morphology:

2 + 1 = 3 credit hours and 8 + 7 = 15 marks for regular students.

Duration: One semester and 20 marks for distance learning students.

Title: Conjugation of Nouns —– Exam: One paper

Course Topics:

Underived and Derived Nouns – Minor, Major, and Ultimate Derivation

Sources:

Sources of Triliteral – Sources of Quadriliteral – Sources of Quinqueliteral and hexaliteral Verbs.

The Mimi Noun – Nouns of Time and Nouns of Place – The Artificial Noun – The Noun of Instance and the Noun of Manner – The Noun of instrument.

Second: Prosody:

2 credit hours and 7 marks, added to the morphology and training marks.

Course Topics:

Introduction to prosody analysis, introduction to prosodic meter, causes and pegs, method of meter, movements and pauses, then teaching the meters with a single foot, which are:

Al-Mutaqarib – Al-Mutadarak – Al-Kamil – Al-Hazaj – Al-Sari’ – Al-Wafir and Al-Rajz – Zihaf and Illah

Prosody and Morphology

Course hours: 3+1 (Regular: 7 Prosody + 8 Morphology + 5 Exercises = 20 marks), (Affiliation: 20 marks).

The exam is a single paper.

Duration: One semester.

First: Morphology (Conjugation of Nouns)

Course Vocabulary:

Singular, Dual, and Plural; Types of Plurals:

Masculine Plural

Feminine Plural

Broken Plural, Plurals of Paucity, Plurals of Abundance, generic collective Plural, and Ultimate Plural Nouns.

Chapter of diminutives

A- Chapter of Attribution

Second: Prosody:

  • A study of poetic meters consisting of two metrical feet

These are: Tawil, Madid, Basit, Ramal, Hafif, Muqtadab, Mujannath, Munsarih, and Mudari’.

Morphology and Rhyme

Hour Count: 32+1 (Regular: 7 Rhyme + 8 Morphology + 5 Exercises) (affiliation: 20 marks)

Duration: One semester

First: Morphology:

A: Vowel modification and Substitutions:

Definition of Vowel modification – Definition of Substitution – Definition of Metathesis.

First: Vowel modification:

  • Hamza: Change of hamza to alif – Change of hamza to waw – Change of hamza to ya.
  • Waw: Change of waw to hamza – Change of waw to ya – Change of waw to alif.
  • Ya to hamza – Change of ya to waw – Change of ya to alif.
  • Alif: Change of alif to waw – Change of alif to ya – Change of alif to hamza.

A: Vowel modification by Transposition:

Transposition of a vowel only – Transposition with a change – Transposition with deletion – Transposition with a change and deletion.

B: Vowel Change by Deletion:

Deletion by Hearing – Deletion by Standard – Deletion due to the Meeting of Two Consonants – Deletion of a vowel and a letter.

Second: Substitution:

Substitution of waw with ta’ – Substitution of ba’ with ta’ – Substitution of tā’ with ṭā’ – Substitution of ta’ with dal.

Third: Metathesis:

The effect of metathesis on the verb’s form – Forms of metathesis.

Second: Rhyme:

Definition of rhyme – Rhyme letters – Rhyme names – The final consonant – Departure – Connection – Rhyme defects.
